Robert Lippok

Robert Lippok, born in East Berlin in 1966, trained as a shoemaker in the costume department of the Staatsoper Berlin before beginning studies at the Berlin Weißensee School of Art, which he left before completing his degree. In 1983, he co-founded the band Ornament und Verbrechen with his brother Ronald, a formative group of the East German underground scene. In 1995, he formed the internationally influential trio To Rococo Rot with Ronald Lippok and Stefan Schneider, which continued until 2014.

Lippok works across disciplines at the intersections of electronic music, visual art, stage design and installation. From 2001 onwards, he released his solo work on the label raster-noton, including open close open (2001), redsuperstructure(2011) and Applied Autonomy (2018). In 2025 and 2026, two collaborative albums with Georgian musician Anushka Chkheidze were released by Morr Music.

His work has been presented at institutions including Palais de Tokyo, Neue Nationalgalerie, Hamburger Bahnhof, Gropius Bau and Power Station of Art in Shanghai, as well as at the 60th Venice Biennale. He has collaborated with artists and directors including Doug Aitken, Constanza Macras, Sebastian Baumgarten and Julian Charrière.

Robert Lippok was a fellow at Olafur Eliasson’s Institute for Spatial Experiments and taught at New York University Berlin from 2017 to 2022.

Since season 2026/27 , Robert Lippok has been a member of the artistic team at the Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin.
