Sarkis

Sarkis, born in Istanbul in 1938, is an internationally renowned conceptual and installation artist who lives and works in Paris. For decades, his practice has engaged with memory, the experience of war, history and art history, as well as questions of culture and space. He describes himself as an artist working between cultures. His work has been presented at major art institutions, museums, and galleries worldwide, including the Centre Pompidou and the Louvre in Paris, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn, the Bode Museum in Berlin, and the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf. In 2015 Sarkis participated in Armenity, the group exhibition in the Armenian Pavilion of the fifty-sixth Venice Biennale, which was awarded the Golden Lion. Major milestones in his career include his participation in documenta 6 and 7 in Kassel (1977 and 1982), as well as solo exhibitions Sarkis with Paradjanov (2015) at Fondation Boghossian in Brussels, Respiro (2015) at the Turkish Pavilion of the Venice Biennale, Sarkis – Cage/Ryoanji Interpretation (2013) at Arter in Istanbul, and Ballads (2012) at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
